About

Olivia Borges (Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, 1987) é fotógrafa. Seus trabalhos são todos feitos a partir da técnica analógica e têm como objeto o cotidiano de pessoas próximas e desconhecidas. Olivia gosta de mergulhar nos ambientes que registra e criar relações de intimidade com aqueles que fotografa. Cada uma de suas imagens extrai um fragmento da rotina de seus personagens, revelando o singular naquilo que – a princípio – pode parecer absolutamente corriqueiro. Nesse processo, descobrimos uma história a cada imagem – fotografia que parece trecho de filme. Além disso, Olivia revela e imprime suas próprias imagens, priorizando filmes em preto e branco. Um dos eixos de seu trabalho é a discussão sobre a materialidade da fotografia, cada vez mais perdida no mundo das telas – em alguns trabalhos, inclusive, convida o público a manipular as imagens.

Formou-se em cinema na Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, em 2010. Por muitos anos, trabalhou no audiovisual brasileiro. Em 2013, fez um curso na School of Visual Arts, em Nova York, e começou a se dedicar mais sistematicamente à atividade fotográfica. Em 2017, mudou-se para Lisboa, onde se formou em fotografia no Ar.Co – Centro de Artes & Comunicação Visual. Em 2021, ganhou uma bolsa no mesmo centro com o projeto “A caixa”, que reúne 26 fotografias impressas e foi exibido no Not a Museum, em Lisboa. Desde que chegou a Portugal, já participou de várias exposições coletivas e individuais, entre elas “Jardim de muitos canteiros”, na Galeria Lapso, em Setúbal, e a coletiva AMOSTRA, no NowHere, em Lisboa, ambas em 2023. Ultimamente, tem trabalhado com imigrantes brasileiros na capital portuguesa e sua relação com a cidade. Parte deste projeto foi publicada no livro “Lisboa Mesma Outra Cidade, Vol.2”, organizado pela Ghost Editions.

Atualmente, vive e trabalha entre Bruxelas e Lisboa.

Olivia Borges (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1987) is a photographer. Her work is all done using analog techniques and focuses on the daily lives of people both close to her and strangers. Olivia likes to immerse herself in the environments she captures and create intimate relationships with those she photographs. Each of her images extracts a fragment of her subjects’ routines, revealing the unique in what may at first seem utterly mundane. In this process, we discover a story in each image—photographs that look like scenes from a film. Olivia also develops and prints her own images, favoring black-and-white film. One of the key themes of her work is the discussion of the materiality of photography, which is increasingly lost in the world of screens – in some works, she even invites the public to manipulate the images.

She graduated in cinema from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in 2010. For many years, she worked in Brazilian audiovisual industry. In 2013, she took a course at the School of Visual Arts in New York and began to devote herself more systematically to photography. In 2017, he moved to Lisbon, where he graduated in photography at Ar.Co – Centro de Artes & Comunicação Visual. In 2021, he won a scholarship at the same center with the project “A caixa” (The Box), which brings together 26 printed photographs and was exhibited at Not a Museum in Lisbon. Since arriving in Portugal, he has participated in several group and solo exhibitions, including “Jardim de muitos canteiros” (Garden of Many Flowerbeds) at Galeria Lapso in Setúbal and the group exhibition AMOSTRA at NowHere in Lisbon, both in 2023. Lately, he has been working with Brazilian immigrants in the Portuguese capital and their relationship with the city. Part of this project will be published in the book “Lisboa Mesma Outra Cidade, Vol.2” (Lisbon Same Old City ), organized by Ghost Editions.

Currently lives and works between Brussels and Lisbon.
